Tourist activity in Rhodes set a new record this year, maintaining high levels and surpassing the previous year’s data, which were already the best on record. According to the November traffic data announced by Fraport Greece, this year’s overall assessment of the tourist season is particularly positive, with 77,000 more tourists visiting compared to the previous year, indicating a slight increase.

The nine-month period of the tourist season on Rhodes operated at particularly satisfactory levels, surpassing the data from the previous year. It confirmed earlier estimates that 2023 would see over 2.5 million tourist arrivals.

From the beginning of the 2023 tourist season on the island until the end of the previous month, a total of 2,625,894 visitors arrived in Rhodes through charter flights. These figures, recorded by Fraport Greece from March to November at Diagoras Airport, show a 2.94% increase compared to the traffic data for 2022, making it the best tourist season for the destination. Rhodes bids farewell to this year’s tourist season with 77,000 more visitors, marking it as the best season of all time despite the impacts of the major July wildfire.

Specifically, comparing this year’s data to the previous year, 2,548,807 tourists visited Rhodes from March to November in 2022, making 2023 the best year of all time with an additional 77,087 tourists.

The breakdown of the tourist season in Rhodes for the current year is as follows:

  • March: 10,850 tourists
  • April: 144,303 tourists
  • May: 325,681 tourists
  • June: 451,644 tourists
  • July: 481,057 tourists

  • October: 260,577 tourists
  • November: 5,847 tourists

For comparison, the previous year’s traffic during the same period was as follows:

Wildfires Setbacks

Despite the setbacks caused by the significant fire, the tourist destination gradually recovered, and after 20 days, everything started moving at satisfactory rates. Accommodations resumed operations, with three major hotel complexes that suffered significant damages undergoing renovations. These properties have also re-entered the market for the 2024 vacations.

Optimistic Expectations for the Next Year

Regarding the upcoming tourist season, airline seat availability is expected to remain at similar levels to this year, with an expected increase of at least 10% from the United Kingdom. Germany is also anticipated to show improved performance compared to the current year.

The destination is receiving optimistic signals for 2024, and according to estimates, the next tourist season is expected to start on our island around March 25, approximately one week before Easter.

Additional 70,000 seats for the 2024 tourist season, including destinations such as Rhodes and Kos island, are being added by Jet2.com and Jet2holidays. This expanded program runs until November 2024, covering several destinations, including seven Greek ones. The new flights were added between the end of September and the beginning of November from airports such as Belfast International, Birmingham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, and Newcastle.

Greek destinations included in the new flights are Heraklion, Kalamata, Rhodes, Halkidiki, Zakynthos, Corfu, and Kos. Other destinations added to the program include Lanzarote, Dubrovnik, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Costa de Almeria, Gran Canaria, Menorca, Palma, Reus, Tenerife, Izmir, Malaga, Alicante, Antalya, Dalaman, Faro, and Girona.

In conclusion, both Rhodes and Greece are receiving positive signals for 2024. The upcoming tourist season is expected to open on our island around March 25, barring unforeseen circumstances.
